acanthus - acan·thus
The thorny leaf of an herb native to the Mediterranean region,
the design of which has been used as a stylized motif throughout history.
Of special note is its use in capitals of the Corinthian and composite order.
It sometimes resembles the leaves of dandelion, thistle or artichoke plants,
pinnately lobed with spiny margins.
Gouache
Pronounced gwahsh, as in squash.
A painting medium in which watercolor
is mixed with opaque white pigment.
Applied in the same way as watercolor,
gouache gives a chalky finish similar
to that of tempera painting.
Poster paints are usually a form of gouache.
Any painting
produced with
this medium is called a gouache.
